Who this trip is for
Riders who want a race weekend with practice days around it, and anyone hauling a camper: every stop has camping, and Oak Hill alone has 235 RV spots. Badlands is the one stop with regular weekend practice hours; the other three open on the days they announce or on race weekends, so this is a trip to plan around the calendar.
The trip, day by day
Oak Hill Raceway

- Ride
- Oak Hill calls itself a motocross tradition since 1975, with seven different tracks. Public riding happens on the days the track announces, so follow the track and check before you go.
- Cost
- Oak Hill does not post a practice price on its site, so ask when you call: (817) 726-0653.
- Know before
- Everyone signs in when entering the park, and minors need a parent or guardian with them. There is a digital waiver on the track's site. The supercross track is off limits without an AMA pro license and a track reservation.
- Eat
- North Texas Smoke BBQ on US 287 in Decatur, open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 3pm, or until it sells out. Or Pronto's Italian Restaurant and Pizza in Bridgeport, about 20 miles away, voted Best Pizza in Wise County and known for its garlic rolls.
- Sleep
- Right at the track: 235 RV spots with 30 or 50 amp power and water.
- Off the bike
- Fort Richardson State Park in Jacksboro, about 44 miles away: a frontier fort whose historic buildings are open Saturdays and Sundays, 10am to 4pm. Adults are $4.
- Pro tip
- Sign the digital waiver at home, before you leave, so the gate goes quicker.
Next: Badlands, about 82 miles as the crow flies.
Badlands Motocross Park
- Ride
- Practice runs Saturdays and Sundays, 10am to 5pm, weather permitting. Badlands is also home to the Texas Full Moon Series, amateur racing at night.
- Cost
- Practice is $40, with no gate fee. On race days the gate is $10, and the race fee is listed at $40 to $45, so check it when you call.
- Know before
- Call before you haul. Every rider needs a helmet and boots. If you are racing an age class, bring a birth certificate as proof of age for the mini classes.
- Eat
- 1846 Restaurant in Greenville, about 19 miles away: wood-grilled steaks, beer-battered cod and hand-cut tallow fries, with Sunday brunch every Sunday in October.
- Sleep
- At the track on race weekends, $25 a camper. The track does not say whether there are hookups, so ask.
- Off the bike
- Bonham State Park, about 31 miles away: 8.75 miles of trails, and paddle boats, kayaks and canoes to rent. Adults are $4.
- Pro tip
- There is no gate fee on practice days, so a weekend of practice is just the $40 rider fee each day.
Next: Underground MX, about 64 miles as the crow flies.
Underground MX

- Ride
- Underground MX calls itself a national caliber track. It opens for organized practices through the year and posts the dates on its social pages.
- Cost
- The track does not post practice prices on its site, so ask when you call: 903-498-4659.
- Know before
- Call before you haul, and check the track's social media for upcoming practices. Riders 17 or younger coming without a parent need the track's form, signed and notarized.
- Eat
- Slap N' Good BBQ in Kemp, about 9 miles away: open Tuesday 11am to 3pm and Wednesday to Saturday 11am to 2pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Or B&B Steakhouse & Meat Market in Kaufman, about 21 miles away, which fries in beef tallow and is known for its chicken-fried steak.
- Sleep
- Right at the track, with hookup spaces on its facility map. Spaces 27 to 54 are power and water only, so ask which spaces have more.
- Off the bike
- Purtis Creek State Park near Eustace, about 26 miles away: a 355-acre lake known for bass fishing, and you do not need a fishing license to fish there. Gates are open 6am to 10pm, and adults are $5.
- Pro tip
- Bring a rod: at Purtis Creek, no fishing license is needed.
Next: Freestone, about 39 miles as the crow flies.
Freestone County Raceway

- Ride
- Freestone is a place to race, not to drop in: the track says it does not run open practice days on a regular basis. Time this stop for a race weekend. The Texas Winter Series opens there January 1 to 3, 2027.
- Cost
- Race entry depends on the event, so check the event page. Dry camping is $15 a night.
- Know before
- Both parents must fill out the minor release. A minor coming with anyone else needs a notarized guardianship form, and the track says there are no exceptions.
- Eat
- The Old Gin in Wortham, about 5 miles away, for hearty meals and a drink after riding.
- Sleep
- At the track, camping is all primitive: no electric or water hookups, $15 a night, and the track asks everyone to top off with water before arriving. For full hookups, 7M I-45 RV Park in Fairfield, about 18 miles away, has 27 full-hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp power, $40 a day.
- Off the bike
- Fort Parker State Park near Mexia, about 21 miles away, where the Navasota River runs through seven miles of trails.
- Pro tip
- Fill your water tanks before you get to Wortham.
When to go
North Texas rides all year, but summer is hot, so the cooler months are the comfortable ones. If you want a race on the trip, the Texas Winter Series opens at Freestone January 1 to 3, 2027. Whenever you go, call before you haul: practice days change with the weather and the race calendar.

What to pack
Track rules and safety
Expect to sign in and sign a waiver at every track, and riders under 18 need a parent there or a notarized form; Freestone wants both parents to sign. Wear a helmet and boots, ride your skill level, follow the flaggers, and keep the pits slow. The supercross track at Oak Hill is for AMA pro license holders with a reservation. Most of all, call before you haul: practice days change with the weather and the race calendar.
Questions riders ask
Can I just show up and ride at these tracks?
Badlands keeps regular practice hours, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 5, weather permitting. Oak Hill and Underground MX open on the days they announce, and Freestone runs race weekends. Call before you haul at all four.

What do riders under 18 need?
A parent with them. Without one, Underground MX asks for a notarized form, and Freestone wants both parents to sign the minor release or a notarized guardianship form.
