When the first frost shuts down the tracks up north, Florida is just getting good. Sand, warm mornings, and four tracks that run from the Georgia line to the edge of the Everglades. This is the trip: WW Ranch in Jacksonville, Gatorback near Gainesville, Pax Trax by the beach at Bunnell, and Miami MX Park at the bottom of the state.

Who this trip is for

Riders who want to keep riding through the winter, families with young riders (Pax Trax and Miami MX both have tracks for the little ones), and anyone who wants to plan a Florida run around a big amateur race week. Three of the four tracks have camping (Gatorback during its events), so it works well if you are hauling a trailer or an RV.

The trip, day by day

Day 1 · Jacksonville

WW Ranch Motocross Park

The finish line arch over the track at WW Ranch Motocross ParkRiders racing through a sandy turn at WW RanchA pack of riders at WW Ranch, with the pits behind them
Ride
600 acres of sand and clay, on a track that has hosted a Pro Motocross national. WW Ranch opens on select days, not every weekend: its open practice dates are on its schedule, including a Halloween open practice on October 31, with riders run by class in 15-minute sessions from 9am to 3pm.
Cost
$40 per class on open practice days.
Know before
The track says it plainly: open select days, call before you haul.
Eat
Famous Amos on Normandy Boulevard, about 11 miles away: Southern cooking and all-day breakfast, serving Jacksonville since 1967.
Sleep
Right at the track. WW Ranch has electric and water hookups for camping.
Off the bike
Camp Milton Historic Preserve, about 3 miles away, where Civil War earthworks still line McGirts Creek.
Pro tip
There is no sewage dump at the track, so roll in with empty tanks.

Next: Gatorback, about 59 miles as the crow flies.

Day 2 · Alachua, near Gainesville

Gatorback Cycle Park

An aerial view of the winding track at Gatorback Cycle ParkThe start straight and jumps at GatorbackYoung riders coming down a sandy hill at Gatorback
Ride
Gatorback runs on event weekends, not drop-in practice days. The next one is the Thor Mini O's, November 21st to 28th, a week of supercross and motocross racing.
Cost
Events need a $25 Unlimited Sports membership. At its Florida Gold Cup rounds, gate fees run $30 to $35 depending on the day you arrive, and no AMA membership is needed for Saturday practice.
Know before
Plan this stop around the event calendar on the promoter's site, Unlimited Sports MX.
Eat
The Great Outdoors in High Springs, about 13 miles away: hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood in a restored opera house. Or Cilantro Tacos, a family-owned taco spot about 10 miles away in Alachua.
Sleep
At the track during events. For Mini O's, electric hookups are already sold out, but there is plenty of dry camping and it does not need a reservation.
Off the bike
San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park, about 12 miles away: one of the largest mature hardwood forests left in Florida. Open 8am to sunset, $4 per vehicle.
Pro tip
During Mini O's, pump-out trucks ($50) and non-drinking water fill come to your camper, so you can stay the whole week. Bring your own drinking water.

Next: Pax Trax, about 79 miles as the crow flies.

Day 3 · Bunnell, near Flagler Beach

Pax Trax MX

Riders coming out of the start at Pax Trax MXA rider whipping a jump against the sky at Pax TraxThe groomed main track at Pax Trax
Ride
Founded in 1995, with three tracks: a full-size track, an intermediate track, and a pee-wee and pit bike track. Its calendar shows open practice on Thursdays from 12 to 7 and Sundays from 10 to 4.
Cost
$40 per rider for non-members, $30 for members.
Know before
Every rider stops at the pro shop to sign in and pay before going onto the property. Rain closes days, so check the calendar before you go.
Eat
High Tides at Snack Jack on the ocean in Flagler Beach, about 10 miles away: a local favorite since 1947, known for its wild-caught seafood.
Sleep
Right at the track: RV sites with 30 or 50 amp power, from $50 a night.
Off the bike
Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park, about 10 miles away, a monument to the rise and fall of sugar plantations in East Florida. Open 9am to 5pm, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Pro tip
This is the easiest overnight on the trip: ride all day, sleep at the track, and be on the beach for dinner.

Next: Miami MX Park, about 252 miles as the crow flies. This is the long haul, so make it a travel day.

Day 4 or 5 · Hialeah, Miami

Miami Motocross Park

Ride
Three tracks for every level, and the most regular hours on the trip: Wednesdays from 2pm until dusk, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
Cost
$50 per rider on weekends, $60 on Wednesdays.
Know before
Riders under 18 who are not with their parents need the track's waiver signed and notarized. Download it from the track's site before you leave home.
Eat
Cuban, of course. Morro Castle in Hialeah has been serving since 1966 and is open seven days a week, 8am to midnight.
Sleep
There is no camping at the track. C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, about 15 miles away, has 83 full-hookup RV sites, open year round.
Off the bike
Everglades Holiday Park, about 11 miles away, for an airboat ride through the Everglades.
Pro tip
No bike with you? Miami MX Park rents equipment, so this stop works even if you flew in.

When to go

Florida rides all year, but the cooler months, October to April, are the comfortable ones. Summer brings heat and afternoon storms, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so keep an eye on the forecast and call before you haul. If you want a race on the trip, plan it around Mini O's at Gatorback in late November.

What to pack

Track rules and safety

Every track on this trip has you sign a waiver before you ride, and riders under 18 need a parent there or a signed release. Ride your skill level, follow the flaggers, and keep the pits slow. In the Florida heat, drink more water than you think you need. Most of all, practice days change with the weather and the race calendar: every track on this trip says to call before you haul.

Questions riders ask

Can I just show up and ride at these tracks?

Miami MX Park and Pax Trax keep regular practice hours. WW Ranch opens on posted dates, and Gatorback runs on event weekends. Call before you haul at all four.

Do I need an AMA membership?

Not for practice at these tracks. Gatorback's events ask for a $25 Unlimited Sports membership, and the promoter says no AMA membership is needed for Saturday practice at its Gold Cup rounds.

Can I camp at the tracks?

Yes at WW Ranch (electric and water hookups), Pax Trax (RV sites from $50 a night) and Gatorback during events. Miami MX Park has no camping; C.B. Smith Park is about 15 miles away.

Can kids ride?

Yes. Pax Trax has a pee-wee and pit bike track, and Miami MX Park has a track for every level. Bring a parent or the right release: Miami MX asks for a notarized waiver for minors without their parents.

How far apart are the tracks?

About 59, 79 and 252 miles as the crow flies, about 390 in all. The drive is longer. Open the trip in the planner and press Get Directions to see the whole route in Google Maps.
