Founded in March 1968, the Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club (DDNMC)had a vision to host a motocross competition that would attract top riders to Northern California, leading to the creation of the Hangtown Motocross Classic. The inaugural race took place in 1969 at Murray's Ranch near Placerville, paying homage to the region's Gold Rush history. With approximately 150 sportsman riders and 30 pros participating and a $600 pro purse, the event laid the foundation for Hangtown's future success. As the race outgrew its original location, the DDNMC partnered with the Sacramento County Department of Parks and Recreation to establish a permanent facility. The facility was moved to Prairie City OHV Park in Rancho Cordova in 1979. Over the years, the State OHV Department collaborated with the DDNMC to enhance the park. Essential amenities such as sprinklers, fencing, restrooms, gazebos, and a state-of-the-art announcing tower were added. Despite pre-dating the Pro Motocross Championship, the Hangtown Motocross Classic remains the oldest continuously running national motocross event. The Hangtown Motocross Classic is proudly organized by a motorcycle club.
